A performance from my "Music for an Autumn Afternoon" recital, IU Auer Hall, October 24, 2021 — the premiere of "Tonal Fabrications" performed by an IU Jacobs School faculty/student quartet: Kathleen McLean, Mingyuan Yang, Evan Duffey, and Ben Mangonon. Tonal Fabrications is the harvest from one of those sessions when I look over unused sketches of tunes and ideas that I’d love to share but haven’t found a home. Once I considered dressing the tunes of the Carol and Fandango in the sound and character of the bassoon and then exploded that magical mix by a factor of four, I knew I’d found the ideal match. The material of the Promenade had been used as a movement from my organ mass “Ordinary Pieces,” but I’ve always wanted to hear it as a bassoon quartet. These three pieces needed an introductory movement and I had a title — Kerfuffle — which needed a busy, swirling musical incarnation: could that be anything other than a bassoon quartet?
